Social Security Tax
Applies to wages up to $184,500 in 2026. Paid equally by both employee and employer.
Medicare Tax
No income limit. High earners pay an additional 0.9% on wages above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married).
Self-employed individuals pay both employee and employer portions (15.3% total FICA). Applies to all 50 US states.
