How to Calculate Annual Salary From Hourly Wage

Multiply your hourly rate by 2,080 for a full-time annual salary, then adjust for part-time hours, overtime, unpaid time off and taxes.

To convert an hourly wage to an annual salary, multiply your hourly rate by 2,080, which is 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. At $22 an hour, that is $45,760 a year before taxes.

That quick hourly to salary conversion works for steady full-time jobs with paid time off. If your hours vary, you work overtime, or you take unpaid weeks off, you need to adjust it. This guide shows how, and what the result looks like after taxes.

The basic formula

Annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × weeks per year

For full-time work, that is hourly rate × 40 × 52, or hourly rate × 2,080. A shortcut many people use: double your hourly rate and add three zeros for a rough figure. $22 an hour becomes about $44,000, a little under the exact $45,760.

Adjusting for your real schedule

Part-time hours

Use the hours you actually work each week. At $22 an hour for 30 hours a week, annual pay is $22 × 30 × 52 = $34,320. If your hours change from week to week, average a few months of pay stubs to get a typical week. Our guide to how part-time paychecks are calculated covers this in more depth.

Unpaid time off

If you don't get paid vacation or holidays, reduce the weeks. Someone who takes two unpaid weeks off works 50 weeks, so a $22 wage gives $22 × 40 × 50 = $44,000. Count unpaid holidays too: each unpaid eight-hour day removes one day's pay.

Overtime

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt workers earn at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. At $22 an hour, the overtime rate is $33. A 45-hour week pays:

  • 40 regular hours × $22 = $880
  • 5 overtime hours × $33 = $165
  • Total: $1,045 for the week

If you work overtime regularly, add it to your annual estimate, but keep a separate "base" number for budgeting, since overtime can disappear. Some states have their own overtime rules, such as daily overtime, so check your state labor department. See how overtime pay is calculated for more examples.

From annual salary to take-home pay

Gross annual pay is not what you will spend. Here is $22 an hour for a single filer in Pennsylvania, paid weekly, with a standard W-4 and no benefit deductions. These are 2026 estimates from the PaycheckHubs paycheck calculator.

Line40 hrs/week30 hrs/week45 hrs/week (with overtime)
Gross weekly pay$880.00$660.00$1,045.00
Federal income tax$63.68$37.28$83.48
Social Security$54.56$40.92$64.79
Medicare$12.76$9.57$15.15
Pennsylvania income tax (3.07%)$27.02$20.26$32.08
PA unemployment (0.07%)$0.62$0.46$0.73
Net weekly pay$721.36$551.51$848.77

At 40 hours a week, $45,760 in gross pay becomes about $37,511 in take-home pay over the year. At 30 hours, $34,320 becomes about $28,679. The overtime column assumes withholding as if every week were a 45-hour week; a single overtime week may be withheld a little differently.

Most Pennsylvania workers also pay a local earned income tax. With a 1% local rate, the 40-hour net drops to about $712.56 a week. In a state without wage tax, like Texas, the state line would be zero.

Comparing an hourly job to a salaried one

When you weigh an hourly offer against a salary, make sure the comparison is fair:

  • Paid time off: a salary normally includes paid vacation and holidays. An hourly job without them earns less than rate × 2,080.
  • Overtime eligibility: hourly workers are usually non-exempt and earn overtime. Many salaried workers are exempt and do not.
  • Hour stability: salaried pay stays the same; hourly pay rises and falls with your schedule.
  • Benefits: health coverage and retirement matching can be worth thousands a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is $22 an hour annually?

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, $22 an hour is $45,760 a year before taxes. For a single filer in Pennsylvania, that is about $37,511 after federal, state and payroll taxes, before any local tax.

Should I use 2,080 or 2,000 hours?

Use 2,080 if you are paid for vacation and holidays. Use 2,000, or your actual hours, if you take about two weeks off unpaid.

Does overtime count toward annual salary?

Overtime is part of your gross pay and shows up on your W-2. It is best kept separate from your base salary when budgeting, because overtime hours are not guaranteed.

Is overtime pay tax-free now?

A deduction for qualified overtime pay was added by 2025 federal law. It is claimed on your tax return and generally doesn't change standard paycheck withholding, so overtime is still withheld like regular wages.
